Accessible Beaches in Tampa Bay

Going to the beach and taking in the views on the sand is not as easy as it sounds for everybody. Maybe you're in a wheelchair, walking with a cane or walker, pushing a baby stroller, or in a boot – who knows! No matter the mobility issue, you still deserve that beach day, and with the help of Mobi-Mats our beaches are beginning to make that possible.

Mobi-Mats, short for mobility mats, are earth-friendly and semi-rigid ADA pathways that help individuals with mobility challenges avoid getting stuck in the soft, uneven sand. Thanks to The Forward Foundation, Help Us Gather (HUG) and the Disability Achievement Center, many of our beaches are equipped with Mobi-Mats or similar technology that will get you on our beaches.

Madeira Beach

Madeira Beach is full of public beach accesses, but the one with the easiest access is in Archibald Beach Park. Close to bordering the sands of Redington Beach, Archibald Beach is a popular destination with restrooms, showers, a picnic area, and a Mobi-Mat located on the third boardwalk to the beach. We’ve pinpointed that exact beach access below in google maps for you.

St. Pete Beach

If you've chosen to stay in St. Pete Beach for your vacation and are looking for easier access, head over to St. Pete Beach’s northernmost beach, Upham Beach Park. There are 4 wooden walkways that will take you from the parking lot to the sandy shore, but the second boardwalk is the one with the Mobi-Mat attached. We’ve pinpointed that exact beach access below in google maps for you.

As of December 2022, there is also now a Mobi-Mat at Pass-A-Grille! One of St. Pete’s most popular beaches is now more accessible, just park at the southernmost beach access located on 22nd Ave to find the Mat.

Treasure Island

Treasure Island boasts one of the first and longest Mobi-Mat on the Tampa Bay Beaches. Located right next to the Treasure Island Waterslide and sharing locations with Sanding Ovations, this Mobi-Mat is in Gulf Front Park. There are two paths that will lead you from cement to sand; for the accessible route, take the main wooden boardwalk. We’ve pinpointed that exact beach access below in google maps for you.

Gulfport

If you've wandered a bit further inland to Gulfport to see what the local businesses and new perspectives have to offer, you can still find a point of accessibility. Gulfport Beach Recreation area also offers a Mobi-Mat in addition to the view of the beach from the other side. There are a few different access points to this beach, but we’ve pinpointed the exact beach access with the Mat below in google maps for you.

Indian Rocks Beach

This smaller beach city has stepped up to the plate as well, housing a Mobi-Mat at its Pinellas County Beach Access Park. The winding parking lot has five paths connecting it to the quaint stretch of beach, but the one with the Mobi-Mat is the middle of the five, which of course we have pinpointed below in google maps.
